Man-made floating islands are the new goal of the Netherlands
Having finally conquered their lands by the sea, with the help of a system of dams and a long pumping of water, the Dutch came to a standstill. The problem of flooding has been eliminated, but where do you want to settle an ever-growing population, in an extremely limited territory of the state? The answer is: in the sea, on artificial floating structures.
The concept of the MARIN Institute is built around the use of giant triangular floating platforms, from which you can assemble an object of arbitrary shape and size. The length of a typical such island, according to the project, will reach 5 km and it can be anything. Berth, trans-shipment base, recreational zone, residential area, floating airport , etc.
The design is modular, convenient, actively used in Europe – a question only in the dimensions of a floating island. Engineers do not know how destructive will be the waves, tides and winds for such prefabricated structures. There is no common opinion and how to strengthen the islands to the bottom, so as not to blow away an occasional breeze. In fact, there are no ready-made technologies, there is only a concept and a project called “Offshore Pool”.
It is a virtual island model of 87 triangles, with dimensions of 40 to 40 m, which will be driven through all sorts of tests. To test the work of fixing fragments in a storm, the effect of a seasonal climate change, simulate the collision of an island with a tanker, etc. The project has great commercial prospects, because anyone can buy and assemble as many triangular platforms as you like. And it is better to study all the factors before people start building floating islands at their own peril and risk.
